Environmental

With environmental preservation being at the forefront of today’s social focus, LMB Farming pride themselves on their commitment to sustainable environmental practices.

With ongoing auditing and compliance to Freshcare, Freshcare Environmental and HARPS certifications display our dedication to ensuring our practices are sustainable and environmentally ethical, as well as complying to strict food safety standards.

Social compliance and ethical sourcing of labour is audited and maintained to the international SEDEX standard.

Soil Integrity

Maintaining soil integrity is paramount to LMB Farming.  Soil erosion is kept at a minimum by incorporating a number of different strategies such as:

  • contouring of rows;
  • graveled headlands;
  • minimal tillage of ground for planting;
  • grassed waterways and inter-rows; and
  • cemented drop structures

Paddocks are fallowed for a minimum of 5 years and banana waste is spread back into the fallow paddocks to ensure soil health is maintained and nematode issues are controlled.

Preserving ecosystems

The natural ecosystem is retained by planting of trees along creeks and waterways, with the sighting of platypus and turtles quite common in the dams on the farms.

Constantly looking at ways to recycle and reduce wastage, LMB Farming are constantly trialling different options to common problems such as reusing banana bunch covers, recycling of cardboard to mulch in the paddocks and recycling of banana string.

Water is preserved through the usage of drip irrigation and monitoring of soil moisture content.

Chemical usage is kept to a minimum with ongoing trials to reduce the chemicals used on the farm.

Projects and Awards

Projects are continually undertaken with research groups, such as CSIRO, to capture data on fertiliser efficiency and environmental impacts.

LMB Farming comply with Freshcare Environmental and Reef Regulation standards, as well as manage their environmental impacts through the ABGC Best Management Practice Guidelines.

In 2015, LMB Farming won the Horticulture Reef Programme Award for their dedication to reducing runoff and sediment, with the aim of improving the quality of water leaving their farms.
